Motorcycle pants, what will you wear?
For many avid motorcycle enthusiasts, choosing pants to wear when riding is not as simple as just reaching into the dresser for your favorite pair of faded jeans. There are many factors that may influence the decision of what motorcycle pants to wear when driving a motorcycle.
First of all, what kind of motorcycle are you riding and will you be on the highway or trails? What time of year is it? What you wear in the heat of summer, will probably not be the same as what you choose in late fall. Maybe the latest weather forecast is calling for rain. And for some, the choice may simply come down to fashion.
Denim jeans remain a popular choice for motorcycle operators. They’re cool and comfortable, but in the event of a spill they won’t offer significant protection. The latest trend in jeans is denim motorcycle pants. These pants are designed for motorcycle riders. At first glance, they appear to be just a simple pair of denim jeans, but with additional protection built in. They can be lined with Kevlar in key places, offering much superior protection, and some even include padding, designed to absorb damaging impact. The general rule of thumb is these types of denim still offer inferior protection compared to leather motorcycle pant choices, but compared to just regular denim jeans, they are a preferred option.
For many, leather is still the motorcycle pant of choice, mainly because of the superior protection in the event of a slide. Also, the thicker skin of leather provides a better cover from stones kicked up from the road. But leather is significantly heavier and some may find the weight ungainly or uncomfortable. And in the blazing summer sun, or in warmer climates, leather can be hot and stifling. Another factor working against leather is cost. Full leather pants are pricey and this can turn some people away from this option.
Rapidly gaining popularity are synthetic motorcycle pants constructed of nylon, polyester and Kevlar. Like denim, they are more comfortable than leather and some styles are also available with the same additional protection, such as impact absorbing padding and Kevlar. Like denim, they are a more affordable choice than leather, a major reason this market is growing fast.
Sensible means safety when riding a motorcycle and the proper motorcycle pants can make a big difference if the unthinkable were to happen.
